The LGBTQ+ community comes together across the world every June to celebrate Pride Month. While events actually occur all year, June was chosen to remember the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village, New York City, in 1969 after police raided one of the city's popular gay clubs, prompting the regulars to fight back in protest.

The following year, marchers organized by activist Brenda Howard and others gathered in New York to celebrate "Christopher Street Liberation Day", referring to the Manhattan address of the Stonewall Inn. Parallel demonstrations in Los Angeles and San Francisco, marked the anniversary of a watershed moment in the history of LGBTQ+ rights.

An annual tradition was born, with more and more cities across the world hosting their own carnivals and street parades to celebrate gay, lesbian, and trans culture.

The first Pride events in Texas began in the early 1970s and have been expanding across the state ever since.

Pride has made huge strides in securing rights and fairer representation for LGBTQ+ citizens and plays an important role in providing a platform from which the community can speak out against discrimination and prejudice.

But there is still work to do. Multiple legislative proposals threatened the rights of the Texas LGBTQ+ community during the 2019 session. Thankfully no real damage was done, due in large part to the efforts of the newly-formed LGBTQ caucus. There are also many societal dangers for the Pride community, up to and including hate-related physical harm.

There are many ways to support the LGBTQ+ community and cause, especially with so many events coming up. A number of cities around Texas are hosting Pride events this month and further in to summer.
